Welcome to the second issue of
Books Connect, a monthly newsletter for librarians
from Elsevier Science and Technology. Books
Connect will highlight new and
forthcoming publications from Academic Press and other Elsevier
imprints, recent reviews, special offers and services designed
especially for librarians, such as VirtualE Library.
Each
issue of Books
Connect will also focus
on a particular subject area. This month
we're featuring core resources in Chemistry.
Look out for upcoming 2007
issues covering women's health, geology and
finance.
The first 25 people to sign up to continue receiving
future issues of Books Connect
will receive a warm and fuzzy VirtualE Library scarf. Also, please
forward this message to any colleagues who may be
interested.

Chemistry |

Carbohydrates continue to be a
central focus of research in chemistry, biology and material
science. Carbohydrate chemistry and glycobiology have
witnessed a rapid expansion during the last few years.
Glycoscience, the term for carbohydrate research in a broad
sense, is an example of how one common topic of interest
stimulates both chemistry and biology to collectively open
scientific frontiers.
This is an exciting time for the
publication of a new major reference work, Comprehensive Glycoscience, edited by J.P.
Kamerling. This four volume work presents a
multidisciplinary review (analysis, biology, chemistry,
medicine, food, plants and material science) of the important
glycoscience research and how this is being used to solve
pressing problems. |

Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards Edited by Peter
Urben, Courtaulds Chemicals (Suisse) S.A.
Now in
its 7th Edition,Bretherick's Handbook of Reactive
Chemical Hazards
is widely regarded as the
reference work in this field-an assembly of all reported risks
such as explosion, fire, toxic or high-energy events that
result from chemical reactions gone astray, with extensive
referencing to the primary literature. Media praise for
previous editions include:
"A book that should be in every laboratory,
chemical plant, emergency response and fire control center,
school and college..." -- Chemical and Engineering
News
"A book that every chemist should have on
their shelf." -- New Scientist
"An essential source of
reference for all those about to embark upon unknown brews and
concoctions of seemingly innocent chemicals." --
Chemistry and Industry Magazine
"A handbook of reactive chemical hazards is a must-have
item on the bookshelf of any organization that carries out a
variety of chemical reactions, particularly synthesis in a
research and development mode. Bretherick's handbook has, over
the years, become the most widely used reference to these
potential problems. . . . The reference lists are extensive
and useful for readers such as chemists, chemical engineers,
safety officers, research students, chemistry teachers in
academia, and all involved in storage, packaging, handling,
and transport of chemical substances. Summing up:
Recommended." -- Choice

Eisler's Encyclopedia of Environmentally Hazardous Priority Chemicals Ronald Eisler, Potomac, MD, USA
Thousands of
inorganic and organic chemicals and their metabolites enter
the biosphere daily as a direct result of human
activities. Many of these chemicals have serious
consequences on sensitive species of natural resources, crops,
livestock, and on public health. The most hazardous of
these were identified by a panel of environmental specialists
from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; these
chemicals are the focus of this encyclopedia. The information presented includes
sources, uses, physical and chemical properties, tissue
concentrations in field collections and their significance, lethal and
sublethal effects under controlled conditions. Taxonomic groups of natural resources covered
include terrestrial and aquatic plants and invertebrates, fish, amphibians,
reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Handbook for Cleaning /Decontamination of Surfaces Ingegard Johansson, Akzo Nobel
Surface Chemistry AB, Stenungsund, Sweden and P.
Somasundaran, Columbia University,
New York, NY, USA
Have
you ever thought about what is in your detergent? Or why
you need so many different cleaning agents to clean your
house? These and many other questions are discussed in
this two-volume reference work. The focus is on cleaning
and decontamination of surfaces, hard as well as soft. A
brief introduction is given to environmental consequences and
the development of detergents, from soaps to modern
sophisticated formulations. Thorough discussions of
mechanisms for cleaning are covered, including both basic
concepts and special cases such as particle
cleaning.

Chemometrics in Spectroscopy Howard
Mark, Mark Electronics, Suffern, NY, USA and Jerry Workman
Jr., Thermo Electron Corporation, Molecular Spectroscopy
and Microanalysis, Madison, WI, USA
The authors of several leading texts in
the field have developed this text in the form of a tutorial
offering a hands-on approach to chemometric and statistical
analysis of analytical scientists, experimentalists, and
spectroscopists. Without using complicated mathematics, they
demonstrates the basic principles underlying the use of common
experimental, chemometric, and statistical tools with emphasis
on problem-solving applications and the proper use and
interpretation of data.

Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry III, 13-Volume Set
A Review of the Literature
1995-2007
Executive Editor: Alan R.
Katritzky , University of Florida, USA;
Editors-in-Chief: Christopher A. Ramsden
, Keele University, UK; Eric F.V. Scriven, University of Florida, USA; and Richard
J.K. Taylor, University of York,
UK
This new 13-volume reference work provides the first point of entry to the
literature for all scientists interested in heterocyclic ring
systems.
Since publishing in 1984,
Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry (CHEC) has
become the standard work on the subject, indispensable to all
serious readers in the interdisciplinary areas where
heterocycles are employed. CHEC-III builds on and
complements the material in CHEC and CHEC-II
and is designed to be used in conjunction with these
two works. Written by leading scientists who have evaluated
and summarized the most important data published over the last
decade, Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry III
will be an invaluable addition to the reference library of those working with heterocyclic ring systems.
