Welcome to the fourth issue of Books Connect, a monthly newsletter for librarians from Elsevier Science and Technology.  Books Connect highlights new and forthcoming publications from Academic Press and other Elsevier imprints, recent reviews, special offers and services designed especially for librarians, such as VirtualE Library.

Each issue of Books Connect will focus on a particular subject area. ThisTake our Survey for a Chance to Win! month we're featuring core resources in Geology. Look out for upcoming 2007/2008 issues covering finance, cell biology and computer science.

Elsevier/Academic Press is reviewing making available in e-Only format all of its book serials. We value your opinion and ask you to complete a short survey.

Enter your email address at the end of the survey for a chance to win $200 USD or currency equivalent of Elsevier/Academic Press titles from books.elsevier.com! Ten random respondents will be chosen and notified via email by 31 December 2007.

In the Field                                                                                   Focus on Geology

Geological diversity provides the basis for the rich variety of nature, and the study of geology touches a particularly wide variety of disciplines. Research in areas such as quaternary science, geomorphology, climate change and natural hazards is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary in approach, combining with chemistry, ecology, biology, mathematics and engineering. At Elsevier we continue to expand our publishing programs to support these developments with groundbreaking projects such as the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Ecology and our award-winning   Encyclopedia of Quaternary Science.

Encyclopedia of Quaternary ScienceEncyclopedia of Quaternary Science
Editor-in-Chief: S.A. Elias , University of London, U.K.

Last month the Geoscience Information Society presented Encyclopedia of Quaternary Science with the 2007 Mary B. Ansari Best Reference Work Award. The award is well-deserved recognition of the hard work our authors put into this outstanding publication. The Encyclopedia of Quaternary Science is the latest in a long line of award-winning geology titles from Academic Press and comes highly recommended by reviewers:

"This book, which in itself best emphasizes the importance of the Quaternary and the studies thereof, will undoubtedly be appreciated by the research community and is here to stay as a frontrunner for many years to come."  Boreas - An International Journal of Quaternary Research

"There is so much interesting material included that it is difficult to lay the book(s) aside..." Journal of Sedimentary Research

"The encyclopedia is will structured with an introductory section followed by alphabetically arranged subjects....Summing Up: Essential. All levels."  L. Joseph, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for Choice Magazine

Encyclopedia of the Solar System Encyclopedia of the Solar System, 2nd Ed
Edited by: Lucy-Ann McFadden, University of Maryland, USA; Paul Weissman, California Institute of Technology, USA and Torrence Johnson, California Institute of Technology USA

Recently, the Encyclopedia of the Solar System, Second Edition received numerous reviews from such magazines and journals as Sky & Telescope Magazine...

...the editors have brought together an awesome amount of information authored by a Who's Who of planetary science. The text and images are satisfyingly up to date, showing, for example, the surface of Titan as seen by the Huygens lander, a snapshot of asteroid 25143 Itokawa from Hayabusa, and geysers on Enceladus as recorded by Cassini. You'll even find disparate commentaries on the International Astronomical Union's controversial "Pluto vote" taken last August." "...I'm confident that I can flip open the Encyclopedia of the Solar System to find the answer - the correct answer - to virtually any question about our planetary realm.

And an outstanding review from the Satellite Evolution Group Newsletter...

When the third edition [of this book] becomes due, perhaps in 2015, our view of the solar system will, no doubt, have changed again. While this means that a volume such as this is immediately out of date in many aspects, the editors have been careful to ensure that it provides "an introduction to understanding the solar system as an interacting system" as opposed to a simple snapshot of today's knowledge. Given the challenges involved in such a task, they have done an excellent job.

As well as reviews from Astronomie Magazine (both the French and Italian issues), and also from Australian Physics, the newsletter from the Australian Institute of Physics...

...an excellent reference for its intended audience including experts who want a single reference with a broad perspective of the solar system.  (Marc Duldig, the Australian Antartic Division)

An Introduction to the Dynamics of El Niño and the Southern Oscillation
Edited by Allan J. Clarke, Florida State University, Tallahassee, USA, James R. Holton†, University of Washington, Seattle, USA, Renata Dmowska, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, H. Thomas Rossby , University of Rhode Island, Kingston, USA

Many scientists either working on the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) problem or its many applications have not been trained in the equatorial ocean and atmospheric dynamics necessary to understand it. This book seeks to overcome this difficulty by providing a step-by-step introduction to ENSO, helping the upper level graduate student or research scientist to learn quickly the ENSO basics and be up-to-date with the latest ENSO research. The text assumes that the reader has knowledge of the equations of fluid mechanics on a rotating Earth and emphasizes the observations and simple physical explanations of them.

  • Keep informed and up-to-date on El Niño/Southern Oscillation research and future trends
  • Quick reference step-by-step guide covering all essential topic areas including equatorial ocean and atmospheric dynamics
  • Understand from leading experts the tools and techniques needed to help while  training and furthering research
