INTRODUCTION A Brain Research Meeting is pleased to announce an important satellite event to the 2009 Society for Neuroscience meeting, on Neural Mechanisms of Ingestive Behavior and Obesity.
Obesity has become a major health concern both within the US and, more recently, in developing countries throughout the world. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in understanding the neural substrates that control both ingestive behavior and energy expenditure. Specific brain sites and pathways that respond to signals arising from the taste of foods, the presence of nutrients within the gastrointestinal tract and the body's energy stores have been identified and we now have an understanding of how and where these signals are integrated and how the modulated by a variety of factors.
This conference will seek to present the current status of animal and human research on how the brain integrates information from multiple sources to control ingestive behavior and overall energy balance. Specific sessions will focus on factors that affect the responsivity of these neural substrates to lead to excessive food ingestion and eventual obesity.
The topics for the 2009 conference are:
• Obesity: genetic, neural and physiological substrates • Developmental and genetic influences on offspring obesity • Dorsal hindbrain integration in energy balance • Non-homeostatic mechanism involved in energy homeostasis • Learning effects on ingestive behavior • Modulators of energy homeostasis and obesity
